About the Blended Online YMHFA Course
The Blended Online Youth Mental Health First Aid Course is for adults who are supporting, working, or living with adolescents (those between 12 and 18 years of age). The program is a guide for those who are the first respondents in situations where an adolescent may be experiencing a mental health crisis.
Authored by Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Australia, the course provides information on mental health problems and strategies to assist youth who may be developing a mental health problem or experiencing a decline of an existing mental health condition. A simple, practical, evidence-based Action Plan is provided so participants have a structure to fall back on when supporting Youth.

FAQ's
Adolescence is the time when mental health problems can first emerge. During secondary schooling years, problems with mental health can lead to a decline in grades, issues with social groups, and substance use or abuse. Such issues can have a lifelong impact. YMHFA training provides tools for those adults closest to young people, so initial support can be offered prior to further professional assistance.
Completing the Youth Mental Health First Aid course will contribute 14 hours of PD in the priority area of Student/child mental health addressing standard descriptors 4.1.2, 4.4.2, and 7.3.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining accreditation.

No. This course provides the tools that our participants (as first responders) need to support adolescents until further professional help is received, or the crisis is resolved.
The course was developed based on information and advice provided by professionals and those with lived experience of mental health problems.
The course can help communities to recognise the warning signs of mental health issues in young people and provide adults with the skills to effectively respond where an adolescent may be at risk of harm. The course also encourages communities to talk openly and accurately about youth mental health, reducing the stigma and increasing support.
Once participants have completed the course, they have the opportunity to complete a short, open-book online exam of approximately 15 questions. Those participants that pass the exam will receive their Mental Health First Aiders Certificate, valid for 3 years.
If course participants do not wish to complete the exam or do not pass (remember it’s only short, and open-book!) then a Certificate of Completion is awarded. Professional Development hours / points can therefore still be logged.
