The peer-to-peer Teen MHFA course is for high school students in Years 7-9 and Years 10-12.
Focusing on improved mental health literacy in young people, this course educates teenagers about the various types of mental health problems and crisis situations that a young person may experience. The course provides participants with the knowledge, skills and understanding to recognise changes in a friends’ thinking, feeling and behaviour that may indicate a mental health problem is present. It teaches the participants how to offer initial mental health first aid support and how to connect them with a trusted adult.
Topics covered include depression, anxiety, eating disorders, bullying and abuse, intoxication, non-suicidal self-injury and suicidal thoughts and behaviours.
- Format: A 3.5-hour course delivered via 3 face-to-face classroom sessions of 75 minutes each.
